What could be better than spending half the morning with my pencils and sketch pads? Taking a break to tinker with a guitar, that’s what. This guitar is my brother’s “junky” one — bought at a pawn shop near Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and shipped to and from Afghanistan in only its hard plastic case, plastered with shipping labels and bumper stickers and record-store decals. The guitar has panache, even if I don’t when I’m playing it. 2011 Goal: Learn to play the guitar. So far, I’m up to one entire chord. I expect my invitation to tour with Clapton any day now.
“Sometimes you want to give up the guitar, you’ll hate the guitar. But if you stick with it, you’ll be rewarded.” -Jimi Hendrix
